California League of Conservation Voters Statement on Today’s Supreme Court Rulings
Oakland, CA – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) issued the following statement in response to today’s rulings from the Supreme Court on the census and redistricting.
The statement from CLCV Chief Executive Officer Mary Creasman follows:
“The census is a tool to determine power in the form of money and resource allocation from government, and our voice in our elections. The Trump administration’s intent with trying to force a citizenship question onto the census was to scare people into not participating. Unfortunately, their work to spread fear and misinformation has largely been accomplished.
Today’s ruling to exclude the census question was only a momentary victory. This is not over; it’s delayed. And the Supreme Court has signed on to supporting gerrymandering, another tool to eliminate political power and voices from Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
Both the census and decisions regarding redistricting will have very real impacts in the fight against climate change. Decades of research show that Black, Indigenous, and people of color disproportionately support environmental action and leadership. These are also the people and communities most affected by the impacts of climate change.
We won’t be able to take the bold action needed on climate change unless everyone has a voice. Make no mistake, this power grab by the Trump administration is about controlling the future.”
